Going South for the Summer
Day 20, Friday 5th August 2011
Fradley junction, we turned left here today. Not to many people watching today.
Alrewas to Hopwas Woods.
First port of call, once we set of is Fradley, which we reach mid morning. We pull in, in front of the "British Waterways" building. While we fill up with water, Sue goes and takes a shower. Me and Josh go and get an ice cream.
Walls is selling a new type of ice cream, its kept in the fridge as solid cubes, this is then put into something like an orange squeezer, and squeezed out into a cone. It looks good, like a quality ice cream, but it stills taste like a normal "Walls" ice cream. We enjoyed it, it was a warm day.
When Sue had finished her shower and the water tank was full, we moved off and took the branch to the left towards Tamworth, the Birmingham and Fazeley canal.
Most of the route is very enjoyable, no locks to start of with. There are the occasional intrusion, such as the railway, and the A38, but other wise it is an enjoyable scenic route.
We stop for the night towards the end of Hopwas Woods, one side of the woods seems to be used by the MOD. We had pulled up, at the start of a long line of boats, we asked them if they thought there would be any room, closer to the village. They said they had only just tied up before our arrival, and this was the first spot they had seen free, so we stayed put. During the course of the evening, several more boats joined the line.
We took a slow walk down to the village, and had a look around, and came back and had tea.
We are inclined to re-tire early when on the boat (all that fresh air!) and spend the evening doing puzzles
Notes on progress. Passed through: Only a few locks today.
