Keighley Quaker Meeting
when we are not away, this is where we go.
Keighley Meeting House seen from the road
I went to a Quaker secondary school, where school morning service was much like any other school service, on a Sunday they tried to make the service, more Quakerly by putting the chairs in a square. The lower forms met in the school hall. While the higher forms has to walk to the next village to go to a "proper Quaker Meeting", at proper Quaker meeting house. Though the use of the word 'Quaker' was not used very much, they preferred to use 'Friends' or 'Society of Friends' or to be really formal 'The Religious Society of Friends'. The meeting House we walked to had no lighting or heating in it, so in winter, when the storm clouds were gathering, it was a cold dull place to be, (they did have a solitary oil light for the clerk to see bye.) So that was my introduction to 'Friends', since then I have gone to many meetings, Derby, Nottingham, Preston, Kings Heath, Sterchley being the main ones, but have done visits to others. Been coming to this one since about 2005, we where walking around Keighley and saw some where was having a garden book sale, and relised it was the local Quaker Meeting. We have been going ever since. In 2009 (April) the meeting house had a new lawn laid and other alterations, there is a record of it here. Second set of pictures from September 2011 - See how it has developed.
the continuing story.
