Gargrave village sits in the centre of a set of six locks. If going towards Wigan you leave the last of the gargrave locks (3 from the village) and you hit very quickly the Bank Newton set of 6, these are a very scenic set, but very large (compared to the dainty locks of the midlands!) and can be very heavy and stiff with malfunctioning gear. This means with a straight run from the village it takes you about 3 hours to the bank Newton Top.
