During the holiday, we spent a wet day in the town, we used the opportunity to look at the main church, the stained glass windows were amazing - fun to try and photograph. (See below pictures for some notes about Skipton)

Skipton

Often called 'The Gateway to the Dales'. Skipton can be traced back to the 7th Centurary where Anglian farmers nick named it 'Sheeptown', Featuring in the doomsday book, the Normans built a castle to guard the approaches to Airedale and it became a garrison town. It is now one of the best preserved medieval castles in England.

Next to the castle is Church of the Holy Trinity that was originally built in the 12th Centaury and replaced in 13th.  Skipton received its market charter in 1204, and the market is still thriving and happens 3 days a week.

The 'Leeds and Liverpool' canal arrived in 1816. providing cheap transport for Skipton's goods, as well as linking it to the other industrial centres of Yorkshire and Lancashire.
