Going South for the Summer
Day 34, Friday 19th August 2011
Leigh/Wigan to Adlington.
We are about half an hour journey from the first lock into Wigan, during this time, Josh stays in bed. Me and Sue cast off and take the boat up the canal. It is a nice day, the sun is out, so we make the most of it. I bring the boat to the landing stage at the lock, it does not look inviting, the top is the height of the roof of the boat, the top has a overhang, and the sides look like BW faverite chunkey armaco covered in concrete. I take the centre line and go to pull the boat, so I can tie her up. One of our bumpers, catches in the armaco hollow, pulling the front of the boat in and tearing into our new cratch cover, ho well.
We are now having to get use to dealing with broad beam locks and changing our techniques to suite. We are soon through the first two locks and moored near the bottom lock of the Wigan flight. We have a sandwich and a drink, to build up our reserves. Have a nice chat to a cyclist who also has his own boat, we compare notes.

As I said, we are back to being a sole user of the waterways, after the middlands, it seems strange. About half way up, Sue is tired, she goes to make more Sandwiches, mainly for Josh to keep him going, I get one too, but I am not sure what excuse I have for one though. Even Josh is tiring on the last locks.
We pull in at the top, take on water, empty bins, ( after ringing BW to find out where they are.) we do find a manual pump out machine, which is not mentioned any where. Where you would bye a card from, I don't know. Sue and Josh feel it is to early to stop, they have now recovered from the locks, so are ready to continue.
We pass Haigh Country Park, pleasant, but not impressed. We pass the outskirts of Standish, and we eventaly stop for the night at Adlington. We stop for the night at the Visitor moorings, next to the park, it is slightly noisy in the early evening as the children play, but Sue and Josh go of in search of food.
We have tea - games - bedy time drinks and so to bed.
Notes on progress. Passed through: Locks broad: 2 leading into Wigan. Locks broad: 21 of the Wigan flight.
Passed by: Dover Bridge - moored there last night. Wigan. Haigh Country Park Standish Adlington - moored for the night.
