NB Dawn moored in Gargrave one morning.

We start out from the bottom of a friends garden and head for Skipton where we stay the night before heading for Gargrave where the pictures start.

To Gargrave and beyond.

A very wet break with Sat, most parts of the country had some sort of flooding. We starting from Riddlesden going slowly to Foulridge, back to Skipton then to Gargrave and back to Riddlesden. There was rain most days, so we moved when ever the rain stopped. I did not start taking any pictures until we arrived at East Marton, but you can find many of these places pictures else where. These pictures of Gargrave where taken on out third visit towards the end of the fourtnight.

Part 2. To East Marston

After Gargrave, we tackle the last 3 of the Gargrave locks, and we are then straight into the 6 Bank Newton locks. At about 15 to 30 minutes per lock, it takes us some time to get through. We then tackle the wibbley wobbleys to arrive at East Marston. The wibbley wobbleys is a winding stretch of canal, as it loops along the contours through some lovely Yorkshire country side.

Part 3 in East Marton, on the way out to Foulridge.

East Marton is a charming little place for any one using the canal. The only draw back is the main road going over the double arch bridge. There are steps going up to the road at the bridge, but there is no footpath and you have to step straight out into the road in front of some very fast traffic.

East Marton has some nice aspects, the local church which can be found by going over the most westerly of the access bridges.

The double arched bridge is always of interest, the line of private moorings next to it, this always has at least some boats of interest.

Over the easterly access bridge you find some lovely cottages, with one of them offering B&B and nice meals during the day.

Following the road round to the top, brings you to the "Cross Keys" pub. the is always welcoming and has good drinks and good food, which I have sampled on several occasions.

These are the pictures I took from our time there.

Part 4 in Barnaldswick

On leaving East Marton there is a pleasant stretch of canal before reaching Greenberfield locks a set of 3 set in delightful country side. In the nearby car park is a hut containing a quaint snack bar serving really good ice cream! At the top of the locks is a water point, which we used to top our tank. We then moved just a little further through the suburbs of Barnaldswick and stopped next to a bridge carrying a main road in to Barnaldswick.

Just off the main square is a co-op which is good to replenish your stores, but we walked on in to the square and went to one of the cafes to enjoy a light lunch. We carried on walking round Barnaldswick and then back to the boat. Some pictures of NB Dawn moored near Barnaldswick.

Part 5 in Salterforth

After Barnaldswick, we travelled a little further to Salterforth, where there is a pleasant village and pub next to the canal, where we stopped for the night. Once settled in to our new mooring, we took a walk round the village and spent a pleasant while at the pub having a meal.

The next morning after a light breakfast, we set off, but after a short while we started having a interesting noise coming from the engine. We pulled over and gave those nice people from RCR a call. These are the pictures I took while we where waiting. In the end they called Ian out from Pennine Cruisers.

Part 6 Foulridge

We make our way to Foulridge, and moor up just short of the Warf. After taking a snack we went for a walk round the village, which is located on the side of a steep hill, You seem to spend all your time trying to struggle up hill, and not slid to fast down again . These are some of the pictures I took.

In the evening we tried the nearest pub which was not yet open! We must have been hungry, we then followed the main road to the next pub and order a meal.

Part 7  on the way back to Skipton.  In the country.

The next day we cast of and went to tackle Foulridge tunnel. It is a traffic light system, where you have to wait for a green light. Then we were off. We came out into the open air, and we pushed quickly on so we could travel the mile to the turning point, turn and back to the tunnel arrive before the lights turn red. Unfortunately some one else was trying to turn in front, and were having problems, so we had to wait while they sorted them selves out. So we miss the green light and had to wait.

Going back, we went straight past Salterforth, Barnaldswick and ended up mooring just before East Marton, as Sat liked eating there? (It wasn't me!) The pictures are here. and here.

Part 8 On the way back to Skipton, Bank Newton locks.

Setting off we decided to stop in Gargrave, not because of the distance, but because of the number of locks in between. It was a cool drizzling day, with heavy clouds, but I still managed to get a few photo's taken.(These are mainley in the Bank Newton area.)

Part 9 In Gargrave

This is a pretty village at the top end of 'Upper Airedale', it was once a thriving market town and became an important transport link with the coming of the 'Leeds and Liverpool' canal. Lead from nearby mines was loaded in to barges while general goods where unloaded for distribution in the locality.

These pictures, consists mainly of views taken on the way home. (stopped 3 times - one there and once back. and a third time as we still had a spare day to use up!) More recently, it has come to be where we keep the boat permanently. (well Bank Newton Bottom lock to be exact.) Gargrave Pictures When we stopped in Gargrave Sat liked eating at the "Anchor Inn", part of a chain, but the food is reliable with a reasonable choice, in comfortable surroundings.

Part 10 In Skipton (Stay a day with out moving as it is so wet.)

The next day we set off for Skipton, and had a wet but uneventful trip in and found some where to tie up. When in Skipton, we would go for a walk in the evening and go for a cup of coffee at the pub called "Canal Side", because it was besides the canal.

Update - The pub has now closed and it is now a large Indian Restuarant,

We spent a day not moving the boat as it was so wet. In stead we went exploring Skipton, we spent a pleasant time at the museum and then looked round the church, pictures here.

Part ?? Back to Gargrave for the night.

We had a couple more days before the end of the holiday, so we decided to spend it by going back to Gargrave, here are Gargrave locks, Once ensconced on the moorings, we went exploring around the village - Gargrave pictures

Part ??? To Kildwick

We turned round and went back to Skipton and then on to the village of Kildwick, it must have been wet as I have no pictures of this part. and we eat at the local pub.

Part 11 - Back to Keighley via Kildwick and Five Rise lock

On leaving Kildwick we traveled back through Keighley and decide as we were doing so well, that we would travel down to the Five Rise and turn round there and come back to our moorings so the boat was facing the right way for next time.
